Here's a truly astonishing argument from a Republic editorial.
The paper is arguing that local outrage to the murder of officer Nick Erfle has led to a "few loud voices of fear and anger"
Self-righteous radio talkers, angry letter writers and mad bloggers claim to know exactly the right lesson to take away from this horrible event.
The editorial writers are concerned that people are overreacting. After all the Republic points out that:
Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris says 10 Phoenix police officers have been killed in the past 20 years. Only Officer Erfle's murder and two others were committed by illegal immigrants.
Golly, of the cops who have been gunned down in the line of duty, only 30% of them have been killed by illegal aliens.
That makes me feel much better.
I’m sure the Mayor and others would like for that to be the effect; that we all feel better. Harris doesn't want vigilante justice to hit the streets. But, I don't think it will help all those police officers in attendance today at the funeral of Officer Erfle, who are so hurt about another fallen comrade at the hands of someone who should never have been on our streets much less in our country. It sure doesn’t for this officers’ wife.
And I bet there are at least three families out there who agree with me.

Did Chief Harris go back 20 years to add the third illegal alien who killed a Phoenix police officer to the count or did he go back that far to lower the percentage of illegals in the count? I would like to know the percentage figure for the last few years because that would be more indicative of the current situation in Phoenix.

Prior to Officer Erfle:
Kenneth Collins, 1988
Marc Atkinson, 1999
murdered by illegal aliens.
Robert Sitek April 2003, critically wounded, survived but with serious injuries.

This column is as disgusting as the Mayor's comments blaming the porous border for the murder of the police officer. Funny Mr. Gordon didn't mention Phoenix' status as a sanctuary city as a possible cause of the murder.

Let's run the numbers. Assuming 12 million illegals (the commonly cited figure) in a nation of 300 million, then 4% of the population is responsible for 30% of police fatalities, or 7.5 times their proportional rate. This is not a very compelling attempt to minimize the problem.
I realize that there are probably more than 4% illegals in Phoenix, but for the argument to make sense it would require that 30% of the population of Phoenix be illegal -- which I strongly doubt.
