Ok, so I didn't have a conversation with Terry Goddard 'cause he's probably not a big Espresso Pundit fan. However, since the Goddard campaign is in complete disarray, I think it would be interesting to get his take on things. Fortunately, Republic reporter Casey Newton got a chance to sit down with Goddard. I thought the resulting conversation was pretty interesting.
Here's how Casey opens:
It had been a tumultuous week on the trail. On June 18, campaign manager Rodd McLeod announced he would leave the campaign at the end of the month. The news hit around the same time that the Arizona Democratic Party's two top fundraisers, Devin Rankin and Vanessa Barrera de Leyvas, announced that they were leaving their posts.
Naturally, I thought this part was interesting.
While he waits for his moment, pundits across the political spectrum are beginning to declare the campaign over. The Republic's E.J. Montini called the race for Brewer today, about a month after widely read conservative blogger Greg Patterson did the same.
Say what you will about Goddard, he is the honest, stable guy we need right now- and he knows how to work with people and get things accomplished- every consumer in this state is better off because of his office bringing justice to actual Arizonans. People all over the state know Terry Goddard and they like his character.....and I'm a Republican.

Oh Yeah? Really?
While things get more surreal here in Maricopa county DAILY - given the ongoing cat fight between county gov and Sheriff Joe - this has got to be the ripest topography for conspiracies on the planet.
But yours is a really comic attempt that just isn't belivable.
Selling Terry Goddard as a Mr Rogers Top Cop who has been victimized by a population turned into a bunch of wing nuts over immigration during a deep recession is just absurd.
Dems will be looking back on this election cycle with shame. Running a mousy twit like David Lujan against a wounded warrior like Thomas?
Please enlighten us. What if anything has the Democrats DONE RIGHT THIS CYCLE?
Terry Goddard is a seasoned vet. Where was his leadership once Janet Nappy went happy off to her cabinate promotion and left the state (and her party) to twist in the wind?
Dems are going to get their heads handed to them in Nov - and they have zero excuses.
I won't be surprised at all if the Pay Czar & Obama confidant Feinberg declines the generous offer from David Smith to come down here and 'ajudicate' paying off the likes of Wilcox & Stapley.
Janet Napolitano or not, this current W.H. has an obvious aversion to linking to Party losers who leave a stink in their wake.
What has the hacks in DC all prissy is that our conservatives under Joe & Jan are CRAZY AND EFFECTIVE.
What about their oppositon? Duds like Gordon navel gazing at a Latino Diva?
Terry Goddard has been Missing in Action - for the duration - from the budget fight right through SB 1070. The feds are taking the unprecedented step of suing our state - mainly because as far as they see it we don't have ANY EFFECTIVE DEMS on the home team.
Which is the best news of all. While the constitutionality question is up for grabs, I couldn't agree more with the final observation.

I thought Goddard's campaign for governor ended in that 1991 runoff. But I was wrong, it ended in the 1994 primary when Basha won the nomination. Apparently, I was wrong again, it will end for the third time in the 2010 election.

Brewer wins big but it will be Rotellini and Horne in the general for AG not Thomas and Lujan.

I'll give the old boy credit, Cuckoo Casey Newton has been a much better writer since he got his iPad. Maybe he bookmarked EP. Now, if he would just do something about his cRazY hair and designer fashion glasses. Maybe there's an app for that?
Attorney Terri has earned a special place in Arizona's history -- nobody does losing as well as he does. Good for him. Hopefully, he'll stick around to lose some more elections in the future.

Is there a space on the ballot for AG to mark, "none of the above"?

Greg, hope you don't mind, but I am going to write in your name when I cast my ballot for AG.

I attended a Dem meeting last Fall. Goddard said (and I've got it on tape)that he could do for AZ what Obama has done for the country. Does that make you feel safe?
Posted by: onehorsetown | June 29, 2010 at 02:00 AM
Bet he won't say that anymore at Dem meetings!

AG Terry is a boring, weak idealogue. Since SB1070 has passed, he's taken to the high grass, occassionally peeking out to say, "This is a bad law and I don't support it, but I'll fight for it in court." Yeah, right. He violated his constitutional responsibility to support the state in the ELL case (impeachable offense?) and now expects us to believe him when he says he'll strongly defend SB1070? Not a chance. Belatedly, he has stepped away and will let Gov. Brewer defend it. She actually believes in it. What a concept! The Dems are going to have their heads handed to them in Nov. Thank you Mr. Obama.
