Very disappointing, to say the least. It does pose the question:

Looking at the Opinion section of the Republic, I count at least six full time columnists (Montini, the one in Tucson, Robb, Allhands, MacEachren, and Roberts). Suppose you get some 20-something for about 2/3rds the cost, if you fired all six, that should net you nine reporters for the same cost as these six. Then you could have those nine do something novel -- report on news, instead of building and attacking strawmen.

Spot on, Rob. But let's not forget Thomas Jefferson's famous quote: "The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers."
