Here's a common logical fallacy: The Hell's Angels like the Doobie Brothers. I also like the Doobie brothers. The Hell's Angels are thugs....therefore I am....what?
The obvious answer is that the fact that the Hells Angels like the Doobie Brothers and I like the Doobie Brothers tells you nothing about me. When presented clearly, the Doobie Brothers fallacy is obvious, however journalists mess it up all the time.
Check out this EJ Montini column about Michelle Reagan. After Russell Pearce made some really ugly comments, Reagan called for him to resign. Here's Montini's take on it.
Reagan quickly sent out a tweet saying, “The obnoxious comments made by Russell Pearce were both disgusting and offensive. Let it be known, he is NOT the voice of my GOP. #Resign!”
Weird. Before the primary election, Reagan made a big push to get the endorsement of Pearce’s buddy and law-writing partner, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.
Wow. Russell Pearce likes Kris Kobach. Michelle Reagan likes Kris Kobach....therefore?
Let's just hope that Montini doesn't like the Operas of Richard Wagner....after all, some REALLY bad people liked Wagner and I'd hate to see Montini have to resign or something.
